THE JEREMYS

135 lines6 min listen
Because Jeremy did A bunch of us kids didn'tdie Now 30 odd years agoThe outcry was fierce Trying to pull this videoWhich in turn ensured Every kid saw itHeard about it, Knew about VedderSome of us were told it was evilBut can't think of any kid my age of 11Who didn't know about JeremyAnd I think it probably saved quite a few kidsFrom grabbing the gun and losing their own lifeTheir future and every good thingever said about themI know it helped save mine
In my opinion talking about supportEmpathy and compassion for everyoneIncluding white boys is particularly importantCause we knew back in 1991white boys Shoot it upKill selves and othersBack then we talked about the Jeremys
Now it's a political war between state employeesAnd parents with kids caught consistent in crossfireNow it's football for politics
Now my kid is a Jeremy, he gets made fun ofHe gets stomped on and we had to workReal hard on his reflexesSo he stopped getting kicked in the ballsOver and over beat down in schoolThat'll do something terrible to a kidSo I try and keep everything at home safeWe only talk about surviving thingsNever about getting evenI tell him, leave that to GodAs He's got a special placeAnd it isn't in heaven with Him
And while we are on this earthGetting mocked taunted and bulliedI keep remembering all the JeremysAnd just how terrible people can beAnd how early that starts for kidswith funny names and weird haircuts
These kids are speaking butNo one is listening and helpingInstead of informing police what they need to know they formalize cover ups and keep jobsSeems they'd like you to believe a kid named Crumbley was supported in killing by his parentsWho look pretty terrible tooMeanwhile if no one asks?Did this kid get made fun of? Was he a Jeremy? When did that facet of this sadness get entirely lost?
It's almost like they want usAll against each other alwaysNever seeing how much money they makeon dead kids same week we get more namesI mourn those beautiful childrenand I worry for my own
I want to see something differentI pray you consider what it means30 years after JeremyTo still regularly discuss school shootingsPerhaps, just a thought? We might start talking about the Jeremys
Per usual I insist we can do more than 1 thingWe can grieve, and leave God His VengeanceWhile we enact firm rules for bullyingAnd reports of all violence at schoolAnd stop leaving life altering decisionsIn the hands of teachers and admins whodefinitely don't get paid enough for that too
Mental Health InterventionPastoral SupportCommunity engagementGive parents help and supportSo maybe they know if their kid is a concernIn part because all these dead athletesMade jokes under their breathNever knowing that was a last straw
And they say, you can't knowMeanwhile studies show bullying as criticalEasier to pinpoint and target but you knowSince shorties and weirdos don't matterThat's who's been bringing knives/guns to schoolThat's who is losing their futuresAnd taking them from kids too
Again seems pretty simpleYou work the problemor the problem is you And your kids schoolI know at mine? I filed all the complaintsAnd tagged local media before InformingThe school of my intent to Call the policeif my child was Once again harmedI asked my son, did you know it's against the lawto hit someone? And he said, no!
Almost like we need law enforcement in classesAs teachers and instructorsKeeping our kids safer from violenceAnd teaching them daily, bit different thanJust a resource officer, I'm recommendingAn update to Arnold's Kindergarten CopBut for all ages and like maybeWe'll bring some things togetherOut here in this country called AmericaJust one vision but I felt called to share itListening to Jeremy and thinking aboutall These Jeremys
My kid knows I was a Jeremy onceI think it helps knowing I got kickedSpit on, or that bullies broke 3 different bonesIt helps knowing that no one ever hits me nowBecause he knows thats what he deservesEven if he and too many other kids don'tAlways get such safety in school
He knows that I take my painAnd I write it down and sometimesSing it aloud, and that my words haveTaken me from stage to stageHe knows some day this life will be different for him
If only we worked harderto give every kid The same hopeMight be many less Jeremys
And just one more lineFor my old friend JeremyWho saw me teased andWasn’t having that happen to himBrought himself a whole rifleTo Middle schoolAnd no one got hurt by Gods graceAnd Jeremy still lives I hope and prayLet there be no more reasonsKids feel they need gunsAnd poof what do you knowNo more shootings in school
Up to you thoKeep only talking about gunsAnd maybe it’s your kid or someoneYou once knew who ends up a Jeremy
